Closed loop sanitation, ecological sanitation and circular economies all go hand in hand. In a circular economy everything is used hence the result is, zero watse. Closed loop sanitation is fast becoming recognised above all as an essential need.  Ecological sanitation allows for the preservation of precious natural resources especially water and fertiliser.

Ecosan (short for ecological sanitation) is based on the safe reuse and recycling of nutrients and water as a hygienically safe, closed-loop and holistic alternative to conventional solutions. Closed loop sanitation systems consequently enable the recovery of nutrients from human excreta and urine, in turn, benefiting agriculture. As a result it helps to preserve soil fertility. In effect, assuring food security for future generations. It therefore also minimizes water pollution and aids the recovery of bio-energy.

Closed loop systems in brief, allow a shift in the way people think about and act upon human excreta.  After all, human excreta is a resource not a waste. Ecological sanitation is a “closed loop” approach, markedly preventing pollution, by recycling nutrients and organic matter.
